About Carpe Diem Gardens

Carpe Diem Gardens is owned and run by Jennifer Lauruol, an enthusiastic garden designer based in Lancashire. She has over 30 years’ experience, including gardening for wildlife, habitat conservation, growing medicinal and culinary herbs, designing sensory and therapeutic gardens, and working in a biodynamic market garden.

Jennifer cares passionately about the environment. She is particularly concerned about so many habitats being lost to urbanisation, leading to the decline of many of our plant and animal species and a reduction in biodiversity. Much of Jennifer’s work as a garden designer focuses on creating and preserving these vital habitats in which wildlife can thrive, enriching biodiversity in our gardens and enhancing the local environment.

Jennifer's garden designs are all based on permaculture, captured in its triple aims: Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Shares. To find out more about permaculture, visit permaculture.org.uk. Jennifer is a Trustee for the Permaculture Association in Great Britain.

Many of Jennifer’s garden designs have received a high level of publicity; her work has been featured in The Guardian, Gardens Illustrated and Permaculture Magazine. She has also exhibited her work at Westonbirt Arboretum, Gloucestershire.

Passionate about using her skills to contribute to local communities, her garden design portfolio includes the Jubilee Sensory Garden, Old Colwyn, which won First Prize in the Best Wildlife Garden in Snowdonia competition. She also created a courtyard show garden for Lancaster’s One Planet Festival.

Some of her many projects include design of a sensory garden for the RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss which secured Heritage Lottery funding; the landscape design to get planning permission for the Lancaster Co-housing project, and 5 years leading workshops for Greenheart Den Community Garden in Barrow-in-Furness, teaching horticulture and garden design.

In addition to her landscape garden design work, Jennifer is keen to share her skills and vision with others. She regularly delivers seminars and workshops on garden design, edible ornamental planting and horticulture skills.

Jennifer’s qualifications include a Certificate/NVQ4 in Management from Lancaster University. She also studied for a Diploma in Garden Design with the Pickard School of Garden Design in Bristol. She holds a Permaculture Design Certificate.

Jennifer lives a low-carbon lifestyle. She enjoys long-distance cycling and walking. She is happiest outdoors, working as a garden designer, planting and creating the gardens she has designed.

Jennifer is a member of the Permaculture Association and Garden Organic Heritage Seed Library.
